The National Conference of Industrial Engineering 2017 and the No.509 Ph. D. Forum of Tsinghua University, which was organized by Department of Industrial Engineering of Tsinghua University, was held in Changping, Beijing on December 23-24, 2017. This annual conference is targeted at the Ph. D. students and senior master students in the academic disciplines related to industrial engineering from all universities and colleges of China. More than 200 Ph. D. students, master students and excellent young scholars from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Science and Technology of China and other universities attended this conference.
The agenda includes invited presentations by young scholars, parallel sessions, best papers election, experience sharing, and salon of young scholars.
The opening ceremony of this forum took place in the Lecture Hall of Beijing North Great Wall Hotel on the morning of December 23, 2017. Assoc. Prof. Fang He from the Department of Industrial Engineering of Tsinghua University presided over the forum. Prof. Kaibo Wang, Vice Head of Department of Industrial Engineering of Tsinghua University extended his warm welcome to all participants. Prof. Kaibo Wang also told some of his own stories during his study for Ph.D to encourage young scholars to realize their academic dreams through firm determination and persistent efforts.

Then Prof. Jose Orlando from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro gave a speech and express his wish of the success of this meeting.

Dr. Chen Wang from Department of Industrial Engineering of Tsinghua University, and Dr. Xuan Wang from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology gave their talks on their own research before the parallel sessions.

The 10 parallel sessions were organized according to the topics including supply chain and retail, ergonomics and health care, transportation and logistics, and quality and reliability.

The invited judges for the best papers included Prof. Xiaobo Zhao, Assoc. Prof. Hongxuan Huang, Assoc. Prof. Fang He and Dr. Chen Wang from Tsinghua University, Dr. Xuan Wang from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Dr. Zhi Pei from Zhejiang University of Technology, and Mr. Xiulin Li from Zhejiang Gongshang University. They listened to the defense of the seven candidates in the finalist for their papers and voted for the best papers. These seven papers were selected out of about 90 theses before the defense. Finally, Jiayi Yu, Liwen Cui and Xindi Tang from Tsinghua University received the Best Paper Award.

After the best paper competition was the sharing of academic stories “On the Academic Research Journey”. Prof. Xiaobo Zhao, Prof. Zhizhong Li and Prof. Kaibo Wang from Tsinghua University and Dr. Xuan Wang from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology were invited to share their own stories with the students.
