IE Day—A grand festival for undergraduates of IE—2015 annual meeting of the Department of Industrial Engineering 2015.06.10

In the afternoon of June 6th, the annual meeting of IE, "IE Day",  was held in the meeting hall of Roman building. The participants to this  meeting include all undergraduate students, and faculty members Professors Zhizhong  Li, Wei Zhang, Kaibo Wang, Zhihai Zhang and Chen Wang, and Ms. Wenjun Liu. In  addition, grade-2005 alumni Bo Zhang and grade-2007 alumni Bo Yan were also invited  to this meeting. "IE Day" changed the serious form of a usual department  meet, and was designed to interact with students more actively. The meeting  involves five sectors: IE-energy, IE-elite, IE-achievements, IE-communication  and IE-future. Coffee break was provided during the meeting.

At 1:30 p.m., the meeting began. At the IE-energy section, Prof. Zhizhong  Li firstly reviewed the development of the department in the past year, and  pointed out that the second international assessment was a new starting point  for our development and we should continue go on to be a world's first class  university. Prof. Wei Zhang then introduced the design of the student  cultivating system, and emphasized the concept of "three-in-one" put forward  by the university to deepen education reform. Mrs. Wenjun Liu introduced career  service for students. Pro. Kaibo Wang introduced the scholarship evaluation process  and the reform of our department’s scholarship scheme to promote the diversified  development of talents.

The second part was IE-elite, students that had outstanding  achievements in different areas were invited to share their experience. The reformed  IE scholarship was designed to encourage students to develop following their  own interests. Students have good progress in academic achievements, academic  progress, scientific and technological innovation, professional applications,  social work, social practice, arts and sports, voluntary public welfare and other  aspects, are all covered in this part. The sharing of these students encouraged  all others to pursue their own growth.

Then the main  venue came to an end, and it came into the IE achievements show. At the time of  the coffee break, students works in the summer practice and technological  innovation were shown to all participants. The 20-minute coffee break became a  good opportunity for free communication among students and teachers.

IE communication section was divided into "teachers and  students face to face" and "Alumni discussion", and students can  choose to attend one of them according to their own interests and needs.

In the branch venue of “teachers and students face to face”,  teachers from the Institute of our department introduced the three directions. Prof.  Chen Wang introduced the research fields of operations research, with an  emphasis on optimization, game theory, data mining, operation management etc. Prof.  Wang also explained a new research topic “behavior operations research”, and suggested  that undergraduate students can play a very active role in our research work,  and encouraged undergraduates to participate in professors’ research teams.  Director of the institute of engineering systems Prof. Zhihai Zhang introduced research  topics in supply chain and production systems, and mentioned that new concepts  like "industry 4.0" and "made in China 2025". Finally,  institute of human factors and ergonomics Prof. Zhizhong Li introduced human  factors to students, and said: "Almost problems related to the people is related  to human factors. Compared with psychology, human factors tend to solve practical  problems". Prof. Li also introduced in detail research directions of  teachers in human factors and ergonomics research institute, so that students  can have a deeper understanding of this direction.

The branch venue of IE alumni communication was also wonderful. Alumni  Mr. Bo Zhang and Mr. Bo Yan introduced their four-year university life at  Tsinghua and also their career stories. Mr. Zhang said that when he was a  freshman, he felt the rhythm of learning life did not change much compared with  the high school. But when coming to the second year, with the rich social work  organizations, sports organizations and other student activities, life was  becoming more busy, but also happier. "The real university may start from  the second term or the second year." He also suggested "try doing  things except for studying, experience different things and start thinking about  planning for the future of life early." During Q&A, Pro. Kaibo Wang asked  the alumni to share their view on the difference between domestic enterprises  and foreign enterprises. Mr. Yan suggested cultural differences that may affect  people’s behavior.

After the second coffee break, it came to the last section IE-Future.  Department Head Prof. Zuojun Shen delivered a video speech. Prof. Shen said  that learning and life is like climbing a mountain, if one only thanks about reaching  the top, he may ignore the fresh air and beautiful scenery on his way, thus  losing the pleasure of climbing.
In the end, the 2015 annual meeting of the department of industrial  engineering came to a successful conclusion.
