[Title] Smart Manufacturing and Healthcare Systems: Problems, Opportunities, and Challenges

[Abstract]
Both manufacturing and healthcare delivery systems have significant importance to economy and society. In addition to widespread attention in smart manufacturing systems, referred to as Industry 4.0, there have been growing interests in smart healthcare systems, where we introduce the notion of Healthcare 4.0. In this talk, we will present the lessons we learned and results we obtained in manufacturing and healthcare systems study. We will address the evolution of Industry 4.0 and Healthcare 4.0, discuss the similarities and differences between production systems and healthcare delivery systems. Next, a brief description of recent studies carried out at the Production and Service Systems Lab in University of Wisconsin-Madison will be presented. Particularly, projects of transient analysis in time constrained battery manufacturing systems and queueing network models of complex patient transitions in large hospitals will be introduced. Finally, we plan to discuss the potential opportunities, challenges and future directions in smart manufacturing and healthcare systems research.

[Bio]
Dr. Jingshan Li received the BS and MS in Automation and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and University of Michigan, in 1989, 1992 and 2000, respectively. He was with General Motors Research & Development Center from 2000 to 2006, and with University of Kentucky from 2006 to 2010. He is now a Professor in Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and the Associate Director of Wisconsin Institute of Healthcare Systems Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Li is the co-author of Production Systems Engineering (Springer, 2009; Chinese edition by BIT Press, 2012), and co-editor of 7 book volumes. Up-to-date, he has published over 120 refereed journal articles, 15 book chapters, and 120 peer reviewed conference proceedings. He has been the Senior Editor of IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters, IISE Transactions, and Flexible Service and Manufacturing Journal, and the Associate Editor of International Journal of Production Research and International Journal of Automation Technology. He was the founding Chair of IEEE Technical Committee on Sustainable Production Automation (2012-2016) and has been the Chair of IEEE Technical Committee on Automation for Healthcare Management since 2016. He also serves as the Program Chair, General Co-chair and Program Co-chair of 2019, 2013, and 2015 IEEE International Conferences on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE), and the Editor-in-Chief of Conference Editorial Board of IEEE CASE.

Dr. Li is an IEEE Fellow and an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer in robotics and automation. He received the NSF CAREER Award (2010), the IEEE Robotics and Automation Early Career Award (2006), and multiple Best Paper Awards from IEEE Transactions, IIE Transactions, and many flagship conferences. His primary research interests are in design, analysis, and control of production and healthcare delivery systems. His research has been supported by NSF, DOE, NIST, PCORI, AHRQ, industry and healthcare organizations.
