Industrial Engineering Doctoral Academic Conference 2016, the 471st Doctoral Forum of Tsinghua University, organized by IE Department, was held in Huairou District, Beijing during December 10 to 11, 2016. Intended for PhD candidates and senior master students majored in industrial engineering in the country’s colleges and universities, the Annual Conference aimed to enhance academic exchange in the area of industrial engineering, strengthen postgraduates’ innovative awareness and abilities, and improve the research and education level of students. One hundred and fifty Ph.D. students, masters students and outstanding young scholars from 12 such universities as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University and Sun Yat-sen University attended the Conference.

In his welcome and opening address on the morning of Dec. 10, Head of the Department Max Shen Zuojun reviewed the history of the Doctoral Forum and hoped that the attendants take the opportunity to make deep academic communication and discussion. He also expected that students should do research practically and return to reality finally so as to make achievement with practical usefulness.

  In the plenary session, Professors Yanfu Li and Fang He of the Department made special reports on their research achievement and future development directions of IE field. Besides, reports on supply chain management, manufacture and production, human factor and human-computer interaction, reliability and health care were made in the 13 parallel sessions. The reporters shared their research outcomes and made thorough communication with the audience.

Academic discussion

  Faculty members of IE Department, Tsinghua University also had a teaching and researching meeting to discuss the cultivation issues of PhD candidates, such as the employment orientation and design of curriculum system, after listening to the suggestions of the students.

  Three PhD students, Rui Chen, Yinghao Jia and Hao Wang, won the Outstanding Paper Awards among six candidates’ papers on subjects of operations, decision-making, and health care, which had been selected from 79 manuscripts by the organizing committee.

  Besides for the academic communication, there was a story-sharing session in the Forum, in which Prof. Xiaobo Zhao, Chair of the Academic Committee of IE Department, and four outstanding senior PhD candidates shared their stories about research and daily life.
