Biography

Qin Gao is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University. her research focuses on the interplay tween individual cognition, social interaction, and computing systems, with the aim to 1) extend theoretical understanding about human cognition, motivation, and social interaction in relation to their interaction with computing systems, and 2) ensure the design and evaluation of computing systems for better human use. Her research is driven by problems in real-world practices in three principal domains (i.e., complex systems, social computing, and consumer product design), acknowledging that human factors theories and design practices are closely interconnected and co-evolving. Her research is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach, combining behavioral research theories and methods, psychophysiological measurement and models, and data-driven analytic methods. These methods allow me to deepen understanding about human’s capabilities, needs, and experiences in their interactions with systems and products from multiple perspectives. Such enriched understanding enables me to further identify critical issues affecting the quality of these interactions, and to provide theoretical principles, research-based methods and tools, and new design approaches to support system/product design practice.

She has published 100+ research publications, including 53 journal papers, and authored four book chapters, and edited 14 volumes of conference proceedings (Google Scholar Profile). Her research has been supported by both government and industrial sources. Her industrial partners include Government-owned enterprises and research institutes (e.g., China General Nuclear Power Corporation, China Nuclear Power Operation Technology Corporation, and Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute), local leading companies (e.g., Huawei, Honor), and international companies (e.g., P&G, Ericsson, Siemens).

Currently she serves as the president of the China Chapter of Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. She has been an associate editor in Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing & Service Industries since 2022, and serves on the editorial board of Scientific Reports (since 2024) and International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction (since 2010). She has served on program committee of HCI International (HCII) and International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics since 2009 and since 2020 she started to serve as the co-Chair of the International Conference on Human Aspects of IT for the Aged Population (ITAP), an affiliated conference of HCII. In addition, she is a member of the founding committee of Nuclear Psychology and Training, Chinese Nuclear Society, and also a technical committee member of Managerial Ergonomics, Chinese Ergonomics Society.

Teaching

l Advanced Human Factors (2007-present): Students are introduced proven procedures, methods, and techniques for creating and evaluating user interfaces, such as user study methods, rapid prototyping, and usability testing. Hands-on work on different techniques was practiced in the form of laboratory experiments and a term project, in which groups of 4 students propose a product idea of an innovative mobile/web application based on user requirements gathering, and design and evaluate a prototype of the product. Once in the semester, an external speaker from the IT industry is invited to bring ideas of how an IT product is developed and managed in the real practice.

l User-centered Design (2021-present): This general education course for undergraduates was developed based on Advanced Human Factors, with the purpose to disseminate knowledge, methods, and tools for user-centered design approaches to students not only from the department of industrial engineering, but also from other relevant domains, e.g., design, computer science, software engineering, psychology, and etc. The course placed a strong focus on knowledge and skills to design interactive system for good human use. Various user study methodologies are introduced with professional practice and ethics; methods for designing, prototyping, and evaluating of user interfaces are taught. The course also includes a brief introduction to human cognition and its implications for information displays.

l Data Analysis in Human Factors Research (2013-present): A completely new course developed for PhD students with the aim to empower the students in analyzing the data and writing up a human factors study. The course covers the majority of data analysis methods used in a variety of human factors research. Students will also be taught how to conduct rigorous data collection and analysis procedures, and how to express the ideas clearly in an academic writing in English. All the learning from the course will culminate into an academic research paper on a topic of the students' choice.

l Human-Computer Interaction (2015-present): Co-developed this graduate introductory course for human-computer interaction. Students are provided an overview and introduction of the basic theory and methods in the field, and led to explore a number of advanced topics, including social media, AR/VR, and cross-cultural design, as well. The course is a mixture of lectures, group discussions, guided activities, and project work and presentations.

l Leadership and Communication (2014-present): This course is designed to help master of engineering management (MEM) students develop essential leadership skills that complement their technical expertise. The 3-day course covers the foundations of effective leadership, strategic communication, team collaboration, and tactic communication skills in a leadership situation.
