Institute of Operations Research & Statistics

We apply state-of-the-art decision science and statistics knowledge to the development of the Chinese economy. To be specific, we use data-driven decision methods to solve complex engineering and management problems and enrich the knowledge in these fields.

Operations Research originates from the military during the Second World War. Ever since then, it has been broadly used in the analysis of human resources, machines and managerial strategy throughout government, military and business operations. Successful stories are heard in many fields, including manufacturing, aeronautics and astronautics, logistics, supply chain management, transportation, health care, service operations management, and energy. Frequently used Operations Research methods are optimization, simulation, stochastic process, probability and statistics. Statistics focuses on the collection, processing, analysis and inference of data. It has gained rapid development in the past century and has been successfully applied to almost all fields in social and natural science. Frequently used statistics methods are sampling, experiment design, statistics decision, statistics inference, and statistics simulation.

After ten year's development, the Institute has made significant achievements in academic research, academic program development, and academic exchange. The research we conduct cover many areas in operations research and statistics. From the theoretical aspect, we explore fields like global optimization, discrete optimization, stochastic optimization, decision theory and data mining. For applications, we have done research in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Behavior and Service Operations Management, Transportation Management.

We have a group of high-caliber faculty members, who are active in their related fields. Currently, there are 11 faculty members in which 3 are full professors, 6 are associate professors, 2 are assistant professors, and 1 is a senior engineer.
