[Title] Collaborative Urban Delivery Optimization (CUDO): Models, Algorithms, Real World Experience


In urban logistics, malls, hospitals or large facilities are of particular interest, as they attract large volumes of the freight traffic and generate substantial negative environmental (noise, pollution), social (traffic congestion and safety) and economic externalities (delivery delays and higher costs). In this talk, I will discuss the challenges in building a platform that enables multiple logistics providers to collaboratively plan their last-mile pickup and delivery operations for freight delivery in such facilities. The problem can be seen as a generalization of the pickup and delivery problem with time windows. I will briefly present the underlying models and algorithms, and share some experience in implementing a platform which is currently on trial with several logistics providers in Singapore.


Hoong Chuin LAU is Professor of Information Systems and Director of the Fujitsu-SMU Urban Computing and Engineering Corp Lab at the Singapore Management University. His research in the interface of Artificial Intelligence and Operations Research has contributed to advances of algorithms in a variety of complex planning and optimization problems in logistics, transportation, and safety and security. The common thread running through his research is a focus on going beyond publications to build usable novel tools and prototypes, a number of which have been testbedded and deployed in industry. He has served on a number of editorial boards, including IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, Journal of Heuristics, and Journal of Scheduling, as well as senior programme committees in AI conferences such as AAAI, IJCAI and AAMAS.
