【Title】 Some Research Issues in Innovation Management -IP and Patent Informatics

【Speaker】 Prof. Amy Trappey

【Host】Dr. Patrick Rau

【Abstract】Technology advances and innovation contribute greatly to the society and economy as a whole. They are critical to most companies for their global successes. Industry and research institutions are facing fierce global R&D competition with many investment scenarios, alternative research directions, and organization re-engineering decisions to embrace emerging technologies. Smart and dynamic decision making, based on circumstances of domestic and global status quo, is required to set R&D directions with sufficient resources. R&D efforts must be strategic, tactical and address all operational levels since these efforts are extremely critical to ensure future success in any given industry. Failing to pick the right directions will waste timely investment and impedes the long-term industrial growth and prosperity. Hence, this talk will introduce the Paradigm for Effective Technology Innovation (ETI) and discuss some solutions and examples for ETI using IP/patent informatics.

【Bio】 Professor Amy Trappey received her PhD in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University, 1989. She taught at the Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Iowa State University (1990~1992). In 1992, Dr. Trappey returned to Taiwan as an associate professor at “National Tsing Hua University (NTHU)”. She was promoted to a full professor in 1996. From 2003 to 2006, she served as the Department Chairperson of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management at”NTHU” and led the department to its initial engineering accreditation approval by IEET. Professor Trappey has also been appointed as the Chair Professor and the Dean of the College of Management at the “National Taipei University of Technology” for a three-year term (2008/2 ~ 2011/1). She was the the Program Director (Convener) of Industrial Engineering and Management Program at the “National Science Council (NSC) “from 2007/12 to 2010/12. Professor Amy Trappey’s research interests are in the areas of e-business, knowledge engineering particularly in IP and patent informatics, and engineering asset management. She has received awards for her research achievement from organizations, such as NSC, CIE, and CIIE. Dr. Trappey is an American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) Fellow and an International Society of Engineering Asset Management (ISEAM) Fellow.
