【Title】 Supply chain management practices for integration in the electronic industry

【Speaker】Dr. Robert Lu

【Host】Dr. Patrick Rau

【Abstract】While competitions in the future are no longer company versus company but supply chain versus supply chain, how to effectively integrate companies within a supply chain to achieve optimal efficiency for the entire supply chain is of critical importance. However, supply chain integration is very difficult to put into practice since it attempt to achieve optimal efficiency for the supply chain as a whole by integrating a complicated network consists of multiple companies, each of which is only trying to optimize its own profit and efficiency. Trying to integrate vendors and buyers for the benefit of the supply chain as a whole is like trying to create an alliance between born rivals. This talk will introduce the foundations, challenges, and practices of supply chain integration in the electronic manufacturing industry. Real world practices will be introduced for how they improve the efficiency and reduce the cost for the supply chain as a whole while companies in the supply chain can share benefit from the increased profit. Experiences from executing the largest supply chain management system implementation project in Taiwan for the world’s largest semiconductor foundry company will be shared.

【Bio】 Dr. Robert T.P. Lu received his PhD in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University. He has more than 12 years of technical and managerial experience in electronic and mechanical industries in the field of supply chain management and enterprise management information systems. Afterward he entered academia as an Assistant Professor of Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan 6 years ago. For 8 years, Dr. Lu worked as a project manager and technical manager with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest semiconductor foundry company. His responsibilities include the Head of the Project Management Office of Enterprise Supply Chain Management Program, the largest supply chain management system implementation project in Taiwan and China. At TSMC, he also worked as the project manager and system owner of many enterprise level management information systems such as the Customer Relationship Management System, Customer Service and Satisfaction System, and TSMC-Online System. Before TSMC, he worked with the Mechanical Industry Research Laboratory at Taiwan as manager of Computer Integrated Manufacturing Planning and Implementation Projects with companies including Phillips and Toshiba. Based on his industrial experiences, Dr. Lu extended his research into healthcare management, leaded projects to improve efficiency and patient satisfaction for Taoyuan Armed Force General Hospital. Dr. Lu’s current research interests are in supply chain management, healthcare management, and management information system.
