嘉宾介绍
Speaker

Dr. Wei Qi is an associate professor in Operations Management at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. He is also a strategic advisor of the China’s Energy Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His work has contributed to smart city operations concerning urban energy, mobility and retail logistics.  His work has been supported by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Fonds de Recherche du Québec (FRQ), and U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), among others.  His research has appeared in Operations Research, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, and Production and Operations Management. Wei earned a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, an M.S. from UCLA and a B.E. from Zhejiang University, China.


讲座介绍
Abstract

The vision of “smart cities” has been pursued worldwide to transform urban habitats into superior efficiency, quality, and sustainability. We argue that the smart-city movement will transition from the tech-oriented stage to the decision-oriented stage. Hence, a smart city can be perceived as a system scope within which planning and operational decisions are orchestrated at the urban scale, reflective of multi-dimensional needs, and adaptive to massive data and innovation.

To exemplify the above notion of smart cities, in this talk, I will present two recent essays.

The first essay is about electric vehicle battery swapping systems: Battery swapping is reviving and thriving in our cities. Some Chinese cities are embracing an emerging infrastructure network called “swap-locally, charge-centrally” to resolve the tension among service proximity, battery availability, and grid accessibility. In this paper, we model this new infrastructure network as a joint location and repairable-inventory model to understand its cost and environmental implications.

The second essay is about retail on wheels, or the so-called “stall economy”: Urban open space emerges as a new territory to embrace retail innovations. Selling products in public spaces with wheeled stalls can potentially become ubiquitous in our future cities. Transition into such a “stall economy” paradigm is being spurred by the rapidly advancing self-driving technologies. This paper provides spatial-queueing models, theory, and insights concerning how to deploy and operate autonomous wheeled vending stalls to scale up the stall economy.
