“Ethics, responsibilities, and dreams”——A journey of the 2016 summer practice 2016.11.04

On the afternoon of September 24, 2016, the 2016 summer practice exhibition of the Department of Industrial Engineering of Tsinghua University was held at RM 3200, the third teaching building. Prof. Liming Zhao, Director of the Chinese Language Teaching and Research Institute, Prof. Zhizhong Li, Party Secretary of the IE department, Ms. Wenjun Liu, Associate Director of the IE Student Affairs Office, Mr. Zhangshuo Wang, Secretary of the IE Youth League Committee, Mr. Jiayuan Liu, Counsellor for Grade 2015, Miss Meina Guan, Counsellor for Grade 2016, ten finalist teams and students of the 2015 and 2016 attended the exhibition.

In the exhibition, team leaders put on a great show, introduced their journey, and demonstrated their fruitful achievements from the summer practice. Finally, eights awards, including the gold award, the silver award and the bronze award of the summer practice, the most influential team award and the best show award, were given to the teams. 

In the past summer, the IE department had 15 teams, with over 50 student members, joined the summer practice. They had their journey deep into the society and left their footprints all over the country; their investigation covers rural areas and social topics that need more thoughts. Among them, 4 teams were awarded the Dream Project honor. Before the exhibition, 10 teams were selected to enter the finalist for department exhibition. 

In the exhibition, team leaders put on a great show, introduced their journey, and demonstrated their fruitful achievements from the summer practice. Finally, eights awards, including the gold award, the silver award and the bronze award of the summer practice, the most influential team award and the best show award, were given to the teams.

 
Interactions during the exhibition 

One of the teams went to Inner Mongolia Ulanhot to investigate and survey the project implementation process of “ten full coverage”. The team aimed at the policy of “ten full coverage” coming into operation from 2014 and went through a six-day journey to get in-depth understanding of the impact of this policy on the lives of ordinary people. During their their communication with the local government and the people, the students summarized successful experience of the policy. At the same time, they proposed suggestions for the policy, and looked forward to the continuation of the practice project

The team “studying in a foreign land – research of primary school for migrant workers' children in Beijing” mainly focused on the research on the current situation of primary education of migrant children in Beijing. By field studies, questionnaire survey, and literature review, the students investigated the daily life of the children of migrant workers, the relationship between students, physical health and other issues.

The team “Yunnan Culture” went to Dulongjiang basin in Yunnan province Gongshan Dulong Autonomous County to study local tattoo culture and invited Prof. Liming Zhao, Director of the Chinese Language Teaching and Research Institute, as their team coach. Due to their excellent work, this team was selected as the Top Practice Teams of the university, and successfully made a documentary film with the help of the school TV. They visited a region in the mountain and conducted thorough investigations of 20 tattoo grandma that are still alive in Dulongjiang. Besides, this team finished a manuscript on "the last tattoo girl". After their survey, they had obtained an opportunity to continuously work with the Gongshan County Publicity Department to make their results better known to people. This team had been invited to participate in the world forum on tattoo culture in March next year.

The team “dream into the plateau” went to Tibet Sangri Town to investigate the policy of targeted poverty alleviation proposed in recent years. They overcame altitude sickness and came to Tibet Sangri Town with an altitude of 4000 meters high for a survey lasting for about a week. A series of interviews and field visits were made to solve potential problems when the national targeted poverty alleviation project and ethnic groups and religions are confronted. 

The team “to explore Xiangxi” went to Xiangxi to teach twelve core competencies including speculative spirit, design thinking, scientific method, communication and expression, reading and writing and carefully organized a variety of activities such as community culture exploration, personal growth summary, classroom space transformation and so on, all of which was based on detailed pre-training about the idea of knowing and changing the world. Their purpose was to bury the seeds of hope in a place where they can't see and feel but still believe.

After the exhibition, Prof. Liming Zhao shared her impression on the projects. She commented that the scope and the depth of the social issues of concern in our summer practice were high beyond her expectations for an engineering college students. Prof.  Zhao also provided suggestions for next year’ practice program. 

At the same time, students of 2016 showed sufficient enthusiasm on summer practice, and many students expressed their views on practice and willingness to do better in the future.

After the exhibition, the summer practice awards were announced. In 2016 IE summer practice, the most social influential award was received by the team “dream into the plateau going to Tibet Sangri Town” led by Chuanju Liu and the best show award was given to the teamYunnan Culture” led by Jingze Li. The bronze awards of the summer practice were received by the team “TMS going to Shenzhen studying sea reclamation team “Wuzhen tourism and business investigation while the era of interne+” and the team “explore Xiangxi” . The silver awards of the summer practice were received by the team “Study of democratic consultation in Zhejiang Wenling” and the team “dream into the plateau going to Tibet Sangri Town”. The gold award of the summer practice was received by the team “Yunnan Culture”.

Finally, Prof. Zhizhong Li conducted a comprehensive review on the summer practice. Prof. Li spoke highly of the summer practice and their achievements, he also explained the importance of social practice in education for cultivating communication, coordination, team spirit, learning and other aspects, and encouraged the students of 2016 to actively participate in social practice, and wished the success of the next year’s practice program.
