Research Center for Railway Safety and Quality was founded on the afternoon of September 8th under the Institute for Quality and Reliability, Tsinghua University. Mr. Lanhua Chen was warmly welcomed to take the position of co-director of the research center and a member of the advisory committee of the Department of Industrial Engineering. The opening and appointment ceremonies were held in Shunde Building, Room North 510. Representatives included Prof. Qikun Xue, Vice President of Tsinghua University and director of the Institute for Quality and Reliability, Department Head Prof. Zuo-jun Max Shen, Prof. Zhizhong Li, Chairman of the Department Council, Vice Department Head Prof. Simin Huang, along with some other faculty members.
Vice President Prof. Qikun Xue expressed his congratulations on the establishment of the Center and Mr. Lanhua Chen’s appointment in the research center, on behalf of Tsinghua University. Particularly, Prof. Xue thanked Mr. Chen for his great support to research of the Center. He pointed out that the development of high-speed railway and transportation is an important direction for our nation’s future development. He hoped research to be actively conducted in the Center to explore new models for railway construction and development with Chinese original contribution.
Mr. Lanhua Chen emphasized the importance of the quality and reliability for the development of high-speed railway. The establishment of this Center for Railway Safety and Quality at Tsinghua University will benefit resource integration and academic collaborations between the National Railway Administration and Tsinghua University. The center will correspond to “the Belt and Road Initiative”, and contribute to the railway development both in China and in the entire world.
Prof. Zuo-jun Max Shen introduced the background of the establishment of the Center. He stated, the Institute for Quality and Reliability should focus on solving big problems related to quality and reliability during our nation’s overall developing process, especially for large complex engineering systems including railway systems; the establishment of the Center and the appointment of Mr. Lanhua Chen as a co-director would help advance the research in quality and reliability, especially with Mr. Chen's practical experience and resources from the National Railway Administration of PRC. Research findings may further help other relevant fields, improve our nation’s quality management, and educate more talents in the field of quality and reliability.
