Students of the “China Studies: Industry, Society and Culture” course embarked on a remarkable immersion journey to Shanghai and Shandong from December 20-24, 2023, exploring the vibrant industrial landscape and rich cultural heritage of these regions. Led by the esteemed professor, Wei ZHANG, the journey aimed to deepen students’ understanding of both course content and the firsthand insights into various industries and cultural developments in China.
Shanghai Exploration: Industrial Giants
SAIC Volkswagen
As part of the “China Studies” course, students aimed to glean insights into the operations and strategies of a leading automotive firm, especially in the EV arena. The visit commenced with an exclusive showcase of the ID3 series, tailored for the Chinese market, underscoring SAIC Volkswagen's dedication to innovation and sustainability.
The discussion session with the Vice President was particularly enlightening, where he talked about the investment in EVs, noting that it is one of the few foreign automotive firms investing in this technology. He highlighted the Chinese market's receptiveness to EVs, driven by a cultural preference for cutting-edge technology, providing a unique opportunity to be innovative.
The visit concluded with a tour of the assembly and welding line. The precision and efficiency were a real-world illustration of the concepts learned in the course. Reflecting on the visit was not merely an in-depth exploration of the realities of the automotive industry in a dynamic market like China, but also greatly enhanced the understanding of business strategies and technological innovations in the automotive sector.

J&T Express
The visit to J&T Express headquarters offered an in-depth look into one of the fastest-growing logistics companies in China. It began at the distribution center, primarily operational during the night. This timing strategy is crucial, as parcels collected during the day are sorted at night, optimizing efficiency. Students were particularly impressed by the advanced sorting and distribution systems, where AI and machine learning play a pivotal role.
During the discussion and Q&A session, Hou, explained how J&T's partnerships contribute significantly to strategic operations and learning about workforce management and training approaches. The investment in employee welfare programs, training for new recruits, and career advancement opportunities demonstrates their commitment to fostering a skilled and motivated workforce.

ZTO Express
Commenced at exhibition hall, ZTO unveiled its history, missions, milestones, and cutting-edge technologies, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of its role in the logistics ecosystem. Following that, students visited the innovation lab, where they witnessed the development of groundbreaking logistics technologies. From drone delivery systems to automated warehouses, these innovations are not just about pushing the boundaries of operational efficiency, but also representing and shaping the future of logistics.
One of the noteworthy highlights is the sorting hubs and distribution center, offering students a firsthand look at the operational running line and the rapid and complex parcel movement. Employing advanced mechanisms, the system adjusted the positions of each parcel, facilitating accurate scan of the codes. This precision ensured efficient distribution to various routes, corresponding to different cities. The process concluded at a length-flexible conveyor, loading parcels into the waiting trucks destined for diverse cities.

Port of Yangshan
The Port of Yangshan visit provided a unique opportunity to witness the intersection of technology and maritime logistics. During the introduction and Q&A session, students delved into the intricacies of port operations and the impact of automation on productivity and safety. The staff highlighted that the key advantage of automation lies in the significantly reduced risk of accidents. Another intriguing point discussed was integrating automation technology, specifically Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), into the port's infrastructure. The sensors and systems guiding the AGVs are embedded underground, making it a challenging endeavor for existing ports to replicate this level of automation without undergoing major reconstruction.
Students then took a tour to view the port more closely. Inside the bus, they traversed various port sections, observing the seamless coordination of automated cranes and vehicles. The sheer scale of operations and the harmonious integration of technology and human supervision were astounding.

Shandong Horizons: Weaving Industries and Cultural Tradition
Sunwoda
The students first visit the exhibition hall, where they were guided through the complex process, presented in simplified steps, and introduced to the raw materials. Given the company’s specialization in batteries, students understand the production process, beginning with the initial material, Ni-Co-Mn(NCM) powder, and progressing through various battery types. These batteries will eventually be used in diverse industries, including telecommunications and automotive sectors. This visit provided valuable insights into the systematic operations of a battery manufacturing company.

Yankuang Lunan Chemicals
Yankuang Lunan Chemicals impressed the students with its commitment to technological advancement, environmental sustainability, and safety. The use of advanced process control (APC) systems and integration of Industry 4.0 technologies such as IoT and AI for predictive maintenance underscored its efficiency and forward-thinking approach. Through guided tours and interactive sessions, students gained insights into the advanced technologies employed in the manufacturing of new materials and high-end chemical products.

New Countryside
At Mushi Town, students were immersed in the vibrant culture of a typical new countryside community. Engaging in various social activities alongside the locals, students gained valuable insights into the traditional customs and rural Chinese life. Under the guidance, students delved into the art of crafting Chinese lanterns step by step, a time-honored tradition symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. Through hands-on participation, they practiced their creative skills and forged meaningful connections with the community.

One tower and Six Museums
Students explored the legacy of Luban at Luban Memorial Hall, the ancient Chinese craftsman and inventor as well as the intricate wood craft. Through interactive exhibits and displays, students were inspired by his ingenuity and creativity. Then, they practiced the art of calligraphy and window paper-cuts, gaining a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese culture.
Tengzhou Museum represents a blend of comprehensive, multi-functional, and contemporary in the preservation of history, art, and humanities. It offers various historical periods, ranging from the Neolithic Age to Zhou dynasties. Here, students were captivated by a treasure trove of Chinese artifacts, each telling a story of bygone times and enduring legacies, offering a tangible connection to China's ancient past.

Confucius Mansion and Temple
At the end of immersion class, students visited the Confucius Mansion and Temple, holding immense cultural significance and embodying the long-lasting impact of the great Chinese sage, Confucius. Exploring these sacred symbols and ancient buildings, students were struck by the timeless wisdom of Confucius, gaining profound insights into his philosophy and teachings. This experience not only deepened students' appreciation for Chinese culture and history but also fostered a profound respect for the enduring legacy of Confucius.

As the journey concludes, this immersive experience has broadened the students' comprehension of various industries and instilled in them a deeper appreciation for China's rich cultural heritage.
