【Title】  Quality and Reliability Engineering of an IC Foundry

【Speaker】 Dr. Wei-Ting Kary Chien

【Host】Dr.Zhizhong Li

【Abstract】Quality and reliability (QR) is important for manufacturing industries. Their importance to semiconductor foundry is even more significant due to the extremely complicated processes and the highly competitive semiconductor manufacturing fields. For China, the annual expenses on IC import have surpassed those on petroleum. It is crucial we have a Chinese matured chip making enterprise to provide local-made IC’s to meet the continuously increasing demands.Starting from a typical QR organization in an IC foundry, we illustrate the major elements of the three segments in QR: Quality System, Quality Engineering, and Reliability Engineering. Selected papers and patents are listed to connect practical and academic values. Some challenging and promising topics are reported to early realize related researches, which will greatly benefit QR operations and help close the gaps between the leading and the local foundries. It is our hope to best utilize and to maximize the resources in the industries and at schools so we both quickly contribute semiconductor industries, from design, fabrication, testing, to assembly, in China.

【Bio】Wei-Ting Kary Chien received his Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering in 1994 from Texas A&M University, where he did post-Doc researches with HP & IBM before he came back to Taiwan for industrial jobs in semiconductor manufacturing in 1995 on software reliability modeling, and highly reliable system optimization, respectively. After working in the semiconductor industries in Taiwan for 6 years, he came to Shanghai and joined SMIC in 2001. In 2010, he was Deputy Operation Director with STMicroelectronics in Singapore. He re-joined SMIC in 2011 as Q&R Vice President until now. He has published more than 150 papers, is co-author of a book, and has more than 60 patents in the USA, China, and Taiwan. His current assignments cover quality system management; incoming, in-process, and outgoing quality control; subcontractor quality; reliability engineering; process and product qualification, evaluation, and monitors; failure analysis; and ESH (environment, safety, and hygiene). He is Senior Member of IEEE, Member of Phi-Tau-Phi Scholastic Honor Society, and a member of Shanghai 1000-Person Plan.
